60 Year after
the Istanbul
6-7 September 1955 Pogrom the worst one in the Post-War European History the
Greekorthodox Community is waiting Remedy Measures
This year marks
the 60’th anniversary of the Pogrom against the Greekorthodox Community of
Istanbul occurred on the night of 6-7 September 1955 during which all the
Orthodox Churches and Cemeteries were fully destroyed, thousands of homes,
shops, factories and schools were destroyed by 100.000 attackers which were
acting under a coordination and operating with 50 men groups. The number of
death of the member of the Greekorthodox community was 16 and the number of
woman raped exceeds 300. The Pogrom was triggered after a provocative act on 5
September 1955 by placing a bomb at the home of the founder of Republic of Turkey M.K.
Ataturk in Thessaloniki Greece by agents of the secret services of Turkey as was
proved latter following their capture.
As a result of
the Pogrom the expatriation of the 100.000 member Community accelerated and
following the deportations of 1964 presently the Greekorthodox Community is
living under expatriate conditions up to 98% since the population living in Istanbul is approximately
2.500. Only limited compensation (approximately 10%) of the material damages
has been done after the Pogrom by the Government of Turkey. On 11 February 2015
the Prime Minister of Turkey
Prof. Ahmet Davutoğlu characterized the events of 6-7 September 1955 as the “Dark
Event” in the Country History which should not be forgotten.
Despite the pass
of 60 years still the real perpetrators planning this Pogrom has been not
disclosed while the trial carried out by an extraordinary court after the Coup
d’état of 27 May 1960 is considered by legal experts lacking of impatience and
objectivity. Therefore the need of a just trial to disclose the real
perpetrators planning and coordinating this act of Pogrom is important for the
Justice system of the Republic
of Turkey.
During the last
4 years the Ecumenical Federation of Constantinopolitans representing the
expatriated Greekorthodox community of Istanbul
presently living in various countries of Europe, America
and Australia
has carried out discussions with the present Government of Republic of Turkey
on the level of Prime Minister. Ec.Fe.Con has suggested specific measures to
the Government of Turkey to take urgent measures for the survival of the
Greekorthodox Community of Istanbul presently
living in their homeland Istanbul.
